A NEW YORK CHESTNUT TRADITION
Roasted chestnuts have been part of New York City street life for generations. By the early 1900s, vendors were selling them from pushcarts around places like Fifth Avenue and Madison Square, alongside the many other foods that helped shape the city’s street-vendor culture. On cold days, the smell of roasting chestnuts became part of the experience of walking through the city.

That tradition lasted well beyond the pushcart era. Chestnut carts could still be found around Midtown, Herald Square, and Fifth Avenue decades later, and roasted chestnuts remain one of New York’s most recognizable seasonal street foods.
