PENNSYLVANIA'S CHESTNUT HERITAGE
Before chestnut blight arrived in the early 1900s, American chestnuts were one of the most important trees in Pennsylvania’s forests. State forestry records estimate that roughly 20 percent of Pennsylvania’s forest trees were chestnuts, and the nuts were an important food source for both people and wildlife. Chestnut wood was also widely used for everything from furniture and fence rails to railroad ties and mine timbers.

The blight spread into Pennsylvania soon after it was discovered in New York, and by 1911 chestnut trees around Philadelphia were already dying. Within a few decades, a tree that had once been a familiar part of the Pennsylvania landscape had nearly disappeared.

For us at Valley Chestnuts, that history makes sending fresh chestnuts to Pennsylvania today a meaningful connection to a food that once played a much larger role in the region.
